The story of KAARU is about dissolving boundaries between Art, Design and day to day living. Held within its folds are works inspired from the natural world that surrounds us, indigenous cultural stories, artistry and craft practices of India that we have inherited, connecting us deeply with the land and its people.
We are inspired by the universal idea of inter-dependence, as the essence of all existence. This is at the heart of our process of designing and making. Be it between our team members and artisans, between craft and contemporary design, wood and metal from the earth and our own existence or between a design concept and its spiritual basis. Our work thrives on these relationships explored and expressed over last two decades.
Assimilated in each design is an unseen and quiet rigor of research, prototyping, discipline and dedication. To try and stretch the limits of any material, form or space without compromise is a continuous process in KAARU. Any abruptness between a fulfilling experience of design and its small details, between material and form, between space and solidity is smoothened out by innovation.
To the future
What is received from the past as our heritage is not our choice, however, what we hand over to the future, is. We at KAARU find ourselves engaged with this opportunity, passionately discovering, loving, understanding the highly relevant traditions and philosophies of the past and translating them through new designs, as possible seeds to hand over to the future.
Our craft-heritage is a precious resource that we believe must not be relegated as some nostalgic inheritance or overlooked in our quest to be progressive. KAARU’s Business woven around accepting responsibility in the evolution and continuity of our crafts as integral to our process of wealth creation. As a ‘Design-Thinking-Enterprise’ KAARU has already made a difference for a few hundred artisans across India. Not just monetarily but in bringing creative vitality to several art forms, dignity and prestige to our artisans and a zeal among their young ones to follow the footsteps of their forefathers.
